Stainless Steel Stair Treads and Step Treads
Stainless treads are specified where a coating cannot be allowed to chip into the product stream and where wash-down chemicals would attack galvanizing. A stair tread is the one grating product people touch with their full weight on every step, so it fails differently from a platform panel: it wears at the nosing, it collects water at the front edge, and it must not flex under a foot landing.
Stainless steel grating for stair tread
Stainless grating is specified where the surface must survive both corrosion and cleaning: food plants, water works, pharmaceutical areas and coastal installations. Grade 304 covers most food and wash-down environments; 316 is used with chlorides, brines or salt spray.
Fabrication detail matters more than the grade. Cut edges and welds must be cleaned and passivated, otherwise free iron on the surface becomes the starting point for pitting - the most common reason stainless grating 'rusts'.
Selection notes for this application
Grating treads win wherever water, oil or snow must fall through: outdoor stairs, cooling towers, food plants and wash-down areas. Solid tread plate (checker plate) wins where small parts must not fall through, or where the stair is inside a clean room. Grating treads are lighter for the same stiffness and are easier to lift out for maintenance.
- Panel depth and support spacing set by stainless steel grating
- Surface: serrated or gritted where wet or oily
- Fixings isolated from dissimilar metals
- Cut edges sealed, passivated or galvanized on site

Frequently asked questions
304 or 316 stainless grating?
304 for food, water and general wash-down. 316 where chlorides are present - salt, brine, coastal air or chlorinated cleaning chemicals.
Why does stainless grating rust?
Almost always contamination: mild steel particles embedded during cutting or welding, or unpassivated welds. Clean and passivate after fabrication to avoid it.
